About this Item
The sixth edition of 1872 was the first in which Darwin used the word evolution in its modern sense. John Murray printed 3,000 copies of this smaller, more affordable edition in 1872. As Darwin only made tiny corrections in 1876, the last made under his supervision, every copy printed for the rest of his life is considered the sixth edition, with the 1890 reprint being the sixth s final iteration. With a glossary by WH Dallas, and John Murray catalogue for 1889, no advertisements. Includes fold-out diagram of natural selection by West, Newman & Co. Publisher s green cloth blind stamped binding, decorative endpapers, decorated gilt lettering on spine. Slightly rubbed extremities, some spotting to endpaper and half-title. Prior owner s signature E.H. Null in fountain pen on half-title. Some folded and bent page corners close to the diagram, which has some spotting but otherwise in good condition to fold and unfold. Thorp has enclosed a clipping from The Radio Times, 5 March 1982, featuring a letter and cartoon about the evolution of the pepper moth. Seller Inventory # ABE-1666168666305
