Small folio. linen covers lettered in gilt and pictorially stamped in blue on front. Illustrated by the author. One of 450 copies printed by Lawton Kennedy. Guillou, a skilled artist and chief surgeon for the U.S. Navy, was aboard the U.S. sloop Peacock when it broke up on a bar the Columbia River in 1841. While the stranded crew was quartered in Astoria Guillou made sketches of the local scene. His California sketches were made when he was on a visit there in 1847, aboard another naval vessel.
