Moderate foxing and browning throughout, many text illustrations, largely in the sections on Roman armies and gladiators (the military engravings are very good impressions, the gladiator section a bit lighter) ; printed in two columns. Engraved title, complete in 2 substantial volumes. half title, title, (7), portrait of Lipsius, 882pp; (8), 899pp. Lipsius developed a Neostoic system based in large part on Seneca and Tacitus that espoused a rational, dispassionate Christianity that was widely influential in post-Renaissance and pre-Enlightenment Europe.
