About this Item
Folio, 12pp, photographs, diagrams, paper covers with embossed North Eastern Railway Coat of Arms in gilt. In very good condition. The King Edward VII railway bridge over the River Tyne in Newcastle was built for the North Eastern Railway by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineeering Company of Darlington. Work started in July 1902 and the bridge was completed in July 1906. This offprint from the Railway Gazette for the North Eastern Railway tells the story of the construction. The original high level bridge over the Tyne was built in the 1840s/50s but main line trains had to enter and leave Newcastle Station by the way they had come in. This was not ideal and so in 1893 the NER decided to build a new bridge upstream from the existing bridge. This bridge became known as the King Edward VII bridge. Seller Inventory # 220
