8vo. 7.25 x 5.25 inches. [2] + 374 pp. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, decorated in gilt, black and red. Bevelled boards. All edges gilt. A little wear to extremities, some browning of margins and occasional foxing; otherwise a very good copy. School prize certificate of 1902. Illustrated by 4 engraved plates by J. B. Zwecker, including frontispiece. Decorated by head and tailpieces and by initials. The first adventure book for children by G. A. Henty (1832-1902) first published 1870/71. The four young people having adventures on the Pampas of South America are named after the author's own children. This edition by the original publishers, is dated 11/97 in the printer's colophon at the end. The plates are by Johann Baptist Zwecker (1814-76), German born illustrator of adventure and natural history titles, who also illustrated the first edition. ILLUSTRATED/CHILDRENS FICTION LIT.
