Book Description Verlag Ernst Wasmuth A-G, Berlin, Germany, 1923. Cloth. Book Condition: Fair. First German Edition. Dies ist nicht eine zweisprachige Ausgabe. Text in Deutsch, nicht in Englisch. Erste Ausgabe. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in German only, not in English. First edition. Printed and presumed bound in Berlin. 11.75 x 9 inches. Contemporary saffron yellow linen-like cloth binding, and with gilt-stamped lettering on a green blaze as to the front board and the spine. The cloth on the spine is half-perished, including losses at the spine head and tail. The backstrip is still intact. Gently bumped corners. Hinges fairly strong, textblock appears firmly bound in. Top page edges tinted green. Green paper pastedowns and FEPs. Handsome ex libris bookplate of Eva le Gallienne to the front pastedown. 32 numbered pages of text, mostly consisting of commentary on the costumes illustrated, followed by 128 full-page plates, many in full color, the balance in duotone. Foxing to the preliminaries, as is common with this book. Gift inscription opposite the title page, "For Eva. from her Pepi. xmas 1932.New York." In pencil on the rear FEP, "From Eva le Gallienne's library, presented by Joseph Schildkraut." Else very clean internally. A Fair to Good copy. From the private library of the English theatrical actress Eva le Gallienne [1899-1991]. The design of the bookplate suggests curious psychological insight on the part of le Gallienne. Le Gallienne was born in London. She made her stage debut at the age of 15 in a 1914 production of Maurice Maeterlinck's Monna Vanna. She became a Broadway star in New York in several plays. She was romantically involved with Tallulah Bankhead and Alla Nazimova, among others. Also present is the calling card of Joseph Schildkraut [1895-1964]. Written on the card in the small ink hand of Schildkraut is the following message, "Darling - This book was printed in Germany in 1922-23. Has been out of print a long time. Found it for you on 46th Street [NY]. Hope you like it. Forgive binding being a trifle soiled in spots - but that could not be helped - the thing not having been reprinted --Love - Pepi." "Schildkraut was an imposing Austrian import-turned-matinée idol on the silent screen. This Hollywood actor went on to conquer talking films as well -- with Oscar-winning results. Inclined towards smooth, cunning villainy, his Oscar came instead for his sympathetic portrayal of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola (1937). His most touching role on both stage and screen would come as the Jewish father-in-hiding, Otto Frank, in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959)." "Joseph Schildkraut landed the title role in the Guild Theatre production of Liliom (1921) opposite everyone's leading lady of choice for the era, the legendary Eva le Gallienne. Liliom made stars out of both young actors and both reprised their roles on Stage eleven years later in 1932. Indeed, the two were often named as an on-again, off-again item during the ensuing eleven years, despite Eva le Gallienne's avowed preference for female companionship." Le Gallienne and Joseph Schildkraut continued to appear together professionally over the years. For instance, they appeared together in The Cherry Orchard on Broadway in 1944. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Association Copy. Bookseller Inventory # 007189
