Publisher: Japan (Tokyo ?) : Society for Preservation of Munakata Jinja, 1958, Japan

Publication Date: 1958

Binding: Quarter Leather (very worn)

Illustrator: Profusely Illustrated With Plates and Drawings

Book Condition: Good

Unusual work about archaeology in Japan. Book is in two parts, one with content in Japanese and the other part in English. There are 121 photo plates in black and white with descriptions in English of ancient objects excavated at the religious sites at Munakata, which in ancient times was on the trade route known as the "silk road of the sea." Additional plates in the Japanese section including several "frontispieces" in color showing some of the ancient objects. There are also many drawings in the Japanese section of the book showing areas excavated and objects dug up. The book reads from back to front in the Japanese part and extending into the plates with English captions, and from the front towards back for the English portion of the text. Title page in English and another in Japanese. Sazo Idemitsu, who wrote the preface, has inscribed the book in English at the back blank flyleaf and dated it 1959, Tokyo. This is of course the front blank flyleaf for the Japanese section of the book. Contents clean and tight in the binding, but the binding itself is worn with the front hinges reinforced with white mending tape. Spine leather has extensively peeled away but the Japanese lettering in gilt is still intact on the spine and bright. The gray cloth covers with minimal wear. A scarce archaeology book. Size: Quarto, 35pp English Text + 121 Plates + Other. Bookseller Inventory # 1984
