About this Item
The ten-volume Hampshire edition, numbered 302 of 1,000 copies. Gilson, in 'A Bibliography of Jane Austen,' E106, describes a similar series, "The Old Manor House Edition," as well as a 12-volume series (the Manydown Edition, which included two volumes of Austen's letters) also published by Holby in 1906.)Edited, and with a Preface to each novel by R. Brimley Johnson, with a series Introduction by William Lyon Phelps. The set is comprised of Sense and Sensibility (in two parts, 225 & 302 pp plus a Preface and Introduction of lix pp), Pride and Prejudice (two parts, 283 & 299 pp), Mansfield Park (two parts, 338 & 347 pp), Emma (two parts, 339 & 359 pp), Northanger Abbey (one part, 338 pp) and Persuasion (one part, 362 pp). The ten volumes contain a total of 30 color illustrations by C.E. & H.M. Brock, most dated 1898. Additionally, Volume I has for its frontispiece an unsigned color illustration, probably by one of the Brocks, after a portrait by Johann Zoffany which is thought to be that of the young Jane Austen. The set is bound in reddish-brown cloth with spine labels printed in red and black. The bindings each measure 21 x 15 cm. The text is printed on a heavy, cream-colored stock. The top edges of the book blocks are gilt and the fore- and bottom edges are for the most part rough-cut. The endpapers and flyleaves are plain thin white stock. The captioned tissue guards for each illustration are all present and in good condition. The covers are uniform in color and largely unfaded, although many of the edges have mild-to-moderate dents, probably the result of groups of volumes having been bundled tightly together. The spine cloth of each volume is crinkled at the bottom lightly-to-moderately frayed at the top. The spine labels are unevenly discolored and are all chipped to a greater or lesser degree. The label text printed in black (including the titles) is easily readable but the author s name, which is printed in red, is barely legible. Internally the set is quite clean, with only minor paper toning at the edges and the gutter. There are no loose signatures. Most of the illustrations have light foxing, generally confined to the top margin, but also affecting the tissue guard and the edge of the top margin of the text page immediately following the illustration. Other specific faults are as follows: Vol. I: Triangular stains on pp 112/3 resulting from a piece of newsprint that was used as a place marker. Vol. III: Two dog-ear creases to the upper corner of the blank page following the last numbered page in the volume. Vol. IV: Mild stains to the first text page (p. 3, unnumbered); a small smudge to the ink at the bottom left corner of the text on p. 120. Vol. 5: A mild stain extends from the fore-edge margin about ½ into the text. Vols. VIII & X: Splitting to the paper covering the front hinge of these volumes, but the hinges themselves are still sound. Seller Inventory # AUSTEN_HOLBY_1906

Store Description
The most convenient form of payment is through ABE or, if you prefer, through PayPal. I also
accept domestic checks, US postal money orders and Western Union payments. I recommend
Western Union for overseas customers who do not wish to use PayPal. I will invoice libraries and
other institutions upon request. Please note that I DO NOT accept direct payment by credit card
or by bank-to-bank wire transfer owing to the significant fees which always seem to be
deducted from the amount received.
Domestic shipping charges reflect the ever-changing USPS shipping rates. The charges for standard domestic shipments are based on books and catalogs sent by Media Mail. There will be no extra-item surcharge as long as the total weight of the shipment does not exceed 4 pounds. The Priority rate assumes that the order will fit in a flat-rate USPS box. There will be no extra-item surcharge as long as a second package is not required. Conversely, if the package is much lighter (as is normally the case for exhibition catalogs) the actual charge for both Media and Priority Mail will be reduced. (I do not operate my "shipping department" as a profit center.) For international shipments (including Canada and Mexico) the matter is more complicated. The USPS discontinued all classes of surface mail for overseas shipments many years ago and the only options are priority or regular air mail. My rates reflect the following conditions: If a book or catalog will fit securely in a regular envelope the cost will be $18.50 or less. For items which need to be boxed owing to their dimension, weight or fragility the rate will be $25.00 for an item which weighs 2 pounds. Based on the actual weight the cost may be lower or higher, with a maximum (in most cases) of $65.00 for as many items as will safely fit into a standard flat-rate box irrespective of weight. As with domestic mail there will be no extra-item surcharge so long as the order will fit in a single envelope or box. However, I strongly advise overseas customers to query me for the actual cost of shipment before placing an order; please do not assume that it can be sent at the $18.50 rate, or else don't be surprised if I request additional postage. I will gladly quote rates for private carriers such as UPS or FedEx, as well as for Express Mail service from the US Postal Service.
