Previous owner's signature. Damp damage to rear board, with heavily faded/stained 4" x 2" area of cloth on rear board. Small 1/4" chips to cloth at head and tail of spine and at tips of corners of boards. Cloth lifting and bubbling a little from front board. Gutter splitting at rear endpaper. Internally good. ; Uncommon. 106 pages + portrait frontispiece + 4 plates. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on front board. Page dimensions: 215 x 141mm. New Zealand history / biography. The four plates are all portraits of Maori chiefs: Hone Heke; Tamati Waka Nene; Te Rangihaeata; & Te Raupraha. The frontispiece portrait is of the author, as Chancellor of the University of Tasmania. "By the time a man has lived in this world for seventy years, I think he ought to have become interesting to some one. And if such a life should nearly all have been passed in these Southern lands, he ought to have a story that is worth the telling" - page 5.
