About this Item
Small wall map of North and South America, restored with modern linen backing and varnish removed, identifying the California Gold Regions. Inset maps of Panama, Hawaii, and what would become Canada and Alaska. Decorative border. Generally good condition, with a couple of small chips in the larger inset map. A fascinating and very scarce map designed, undoubtedly, for prospective travelers to California to enable them to visualize the distances involved in transit. Suter's [sic] Fort is named in California, at the base of the named Gold Region. The insets also have most interesting features, with the Panama map showing the route of a proposed railroad across the isthmus. The Canadian inset shows all of Hudson Bay and the islands above Canada. It suggests, but does not definitive show, the existence of a Northwest Passage. In the Atlantic Ocean it shows the course of the Gulf Stream. In Utah it shows a "Mormon Settlement." Not in Wheat (Gold Regions). Seller Inventory # m00324
