About this Item
A fine first edition, first impression, first printing of Dublin born, Iris Murdoch's book shortlisted for the 1969 Booker Prize, published by Chatto & Windus in London in 1968. This tight, bright 350 page book is bound in brown boards with gold titles on the spine and white end papers. The book has no bumping, marking or writing and the top edge is coloured brown. The fine dust jacket is not price clipped, has a striking cover design by John Ward, a small repaired tear at the top rear front corner and is protected by a clear removable wrapper. It begins "A HEAD of department, working quietly in his room in Whitehall on a summer afternoon, is not accustomed to be disturbed by the nearby and indubitable sound of a revolver shot" And thus Iris Murdoch's eleventh novel, a domestic comedy, wends its way to a joyous conclusion where omnia vincit amor. Iris Murdoch won the 1978 Booker Prize with her novel The Sea, The Sea. Her first novel Under the Net was chosen by the American Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th Century.
