____ This 62 page format is not noted in any of the standard bibliographies._____ It was almost certainly adapted from the first edition (cf: Graff=3407 Howes=Q14 Smith=8457 Herd=1848) to serve as a land promotional for the Northern Pacific Railroad._____ . _____ The basic changes are: . _____ 1._____ The addition of the "New States" sub-title to the front cover and page 1 and the deletion of all references to "Vol. I, No.8" from the front cover and page 1 banners._____ . _____ 2._____ The deletion of the first 22 page section dealing with South Dakota (sections 1-10)._____ This has forced a renumbering of the retained chapters and new page numbers (relocated from the top forecorner to bottom center)._____ Though otherwise the basic layout and text remains the same._____ . _____ 3._____ The deletion of chapter 37 ("Among the Black Hills") from the first._____ This has been replaced by relocating the section on homesteading and pre-emption from pp 83-4 of the first._____ . _____ 4._____ Beginning at page 58, the previous statistics for South Dakota have been replaced by those for North Dakota._____ . _____ 5._____ The inside rear cover, blank in the first, is an ad for the Northern Pacific Railroad Lands for sale in Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. _____ The rear outside cover, which lists all the titles issued in the Tribune series in 1889, still describes this title as having 84 pages. _____ "Rare.A collection of thirty-seven [double-column] letters, describing travels through the Dakotas, Montana and Washington.The letters include observations about the cowboys of Wyoming and the reign of outlaws in Montana." --cf. Six-Guns=1780 (re:._84 pp). _____ The wrappers are soiled, with short edge tears and a couple of corners missing._____ The spine is very tenuous. _____ WorldCat (08/21) shows a single holding for this format (MnHS). _____.
