Synopsis: "I realized early on that you had to be true to your convictions, even if it meant you might not win the next election."

When Reno Republican Barbara Vucanovich was elected to Congress in 1982, she became the first Nevada woman ever elected to a federal office, and the first person to represent Nevadaís newly created Second Congressional District. Campaigning as a "tough grandmother," she distinguished herself during her fourteen-year service in the U.S. House of Representatives by her indefatigable efforts on behalf of her state, her commitment to the conservative ideals of her party and the needs of her constituency, and her commonsensical approach to politics and her own life.

In this engaging, richly informative memoir, Vucanovich reflects with candor and modesty on her political career and the long road that led to it - her years as mother of a growing family, businesswoman, and community and Republican Party volunteer, and her introduction to politics as the Northern Nevada manager of several of Paul Laxaltís campaigns. Encouraged by Laxalt to run for Nevadaís new congressional seat, she became a sixty-one-year-old first-time political candidate.

Vucanovichís lively accounts of campaigning and office-holding offer a rare insiderís view of the day-to-day realities of a political career - the excitement and exhaustion of hard-fought campaigns; the endless cross-country commutes to maintain contact with constituents; the inner workings of Congress as bills are written, debated, and voted on. Her profiles of other politicians, from Reno city leaders to Nevada state and national officeholders to her congressional colleagues to presidents of the U.S., offer valuable insight into the personalities and politics of some of the most important American political figures of the past half century. This is a book that offers any reader, of whatever political persuasion, an exceptionally vivid account of politics on both the state and national levels during a notably turbulent era.

Book Description University of Nevada Press, Reno, Nevada, U.S.A., 2005. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 0874176239 Inscribed by BOTH Authors, This is a former library book with some of the usual identifiers, front free end page removed. "Nevadan Barbara Vucanovich enjoyed a long, productive, and somewhat unlikely political career. After years as a wife, mother, businesswoman, community activist, and campaign volunteer, she increased her political involvement by serving as the northern Nevada manager of Paul Laxalt's several campaigns. In 1982, encouraged by Laxalt to run in Nevada's newly created Second Congressional District, she became a sixty-one-year-old first-time political candidate. She campaigned as a "tough grandmother" and became the first Nevada woman ever elected to a federal office." "Over the next fourteen years, Congressman (the title she preferred) Vucanovich worked tirelessly to advance the interests of her state and the conservative ideals of the Republican Party. In this detailed memoir, she reflects on her political career and the long road that led to it. Her lively accounts of campaigning and office-holding offer a rare insider's view of the day-to-day realities of a politician's life - the excitement and exhaustion of hard-fought campaigns; the endless cross-country commutes to maintain contact with constituents; the inner workings of Congress as bills are written, debated, and voted on. Her descriptions of campaigning in Nevada, with its sparse and largely rural population, tell us more about the true nature of politics in the Silver State than any number of academic studies, and her profiles of other politicians - from Reno city leaders to Nevada state and national officeholders to her congressional colleagues to presidents of the United States - offer insight into the personalities and politics of some of the most important American political figures of the past half-century. She gives us an insider's chronicle of the "Gingrich Revolution" that brought the Republicans into control of Congress, and her account of her efforts on behalf of such women's issues as breast cancer research and child care demonstrates that her activism and dedication extended far beyond Nevada."--BOOK JACKET. Book Description University of Nevada Press, Reno, Nev., 2005. Full-bound Cloth. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First edition, first printing, with full number line. Fine in fine, probably unread. With a background as U.S. Sen. Autobiography written with her daughter, former Assemblywoman, former district attorney and former state Treasurer Patricia D. Cafferata. Book is signed on the title page by both authors, in what appears to be the same blue fine-point but in different hands, "Barbara F. Vucanovich & Patricia D. Cafferata," dated "Novermber 28, 2005 Reno," and inscribed in Barbara Vucanovich's hand above the signatures "To Kathy Augustine -- Thanks for all of your years of public service." This book was purchased at the Kathy Augustine estate auction in Las Vegas June 23, 2007. Kathy Augustine, 50, was the first woman to hold the elected office of Nevada state controller and was seeking vindication by campaigning for re-election to that office when she was found dead at home on July 11, 2006. Augustine had been impeached, tried and convicted by the state Senate in 2004 for admitted violations of state ethics laws, was censured and fined a record $15,000 by the state Ethics Commission but allowed to retain her office. Kathy Augustine's fourth husband, Chaz Higgs, went on trial in Reno, Nev. June 18, 2007 and was convicted June 29 of the murder of Kathy Augustine by injection of the powerful muscle relaxant succinylcholine. A presumed unique signed association copy, linking three women who are significant Nevada historical & political figures. Photocopy of Augustine estate auction receipt itemizing the box of books in which this volume was found will be enclosed with volume. Check our listings for other signed Augustine estate books. Nevada political history. Reduced from $47. Signed Both Authors to Kathy A. Bookseller Inventory # 000035
