About this Item
George Bain, Nairn, 1900, original edition; 8vo, 155 x 225mm; pp [v], xv, 304; frontispiece drawing of the "Princess Stone", a pillar of siliceous freestone, partially sunken into the soil in Glenferness with incised Celtic symbols and thought to date from around the sixth century AD; maroon cloth, spine gilt, top edge gilt; very slight rubbing of the ends of the spine but otherwise a very good copy; ownership inscription in ink on the verso of the half title. . . . The subject of the book, the parish of Ardclach, is to the south and east of Nairn, taking in part of the Findhorn valley. Thomson came to Nairnshire as the Free Church teacher in Cawdor and as someone particularly interested in botany, entomology and other subjects of natural history found great opportunities for study. The book has chapters primarily on the flora of Ardclach but also on its fauna, inseect life, place names and general characteristics and has become a classic of its kind. The publisher, George Bain, was the editor of the weekly Nairnshire Telegraph, founded in 1853 and acquired by Bain in 1869. Liberal in general outlook, the Telegraph was a strong supporter of the Scottish Rights Movement. Bain saw his duty as supporting and publicising informative writing about the community and its history and published several books in consequence. Seller Inventory # 000960
