About this Item
Stitched, beige, overlapping wraps with black titles. I have a number of copies of The National Magazine from 1855 and 1856. They are all in close to the same condition. In general there is some wear especially to overlapping edges. Also some toning and foxing both exterior and interior -- see scan for specific magaazine. This copy has damage on top third of spine. Book is square; binding secure. ; Vol. 6 No. 2; B&W Illustrations from Engravings; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 97-192 pages; Each magazine has a variety of articles on subjects ranging from Nature, religion, history, travel to contemporary biography and literature. Many of the articles have illustrations taken from engravings. This issue has an article on the One Dollar Bill and another on The Christian Negro. This latter article is of some interest since it offers a fanciful portrayal of a slave who comes across as more Christian than his Southern masters. The article both humanizes and patronizes the slave. Antebellum ambivalence? There are ten or more other articles along with several recurring sections: Correspondence, Editorial Notes and Gleanings, Book Notices, Literary Record, and Arts and Sciences. Each issue offers insight into what interested Americans in the decade before the Civil War. Seller Inventory # 12587
