About this Item
Gray wraps, perfect bound; 426pp; 5 maps; index and appendices. This large paper bound book was Treat's thesis presented in "Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Leland Stanford Junior University." The preface states, "It is the purpose of this study to show how the national public lands passed into private ownership during the first great period of our land system. It is concerned, therefore, only with the disposal of the lands by the nation, it does not presume to discuss the uses to which the lands were put. It considers the land grants for education, for example, merely as a way in which great areas passed from the public domain to the control of the States; it does not work out the management of those grants. In short, it deals with the origin of the pubic domain and with every form of disposition which was in use before 1820." A thorough, scholarly look at our nation's early land system. Light crease at lower right corner of front wrapper; some scuffing along the spine; light residue of glue where sticker may have been removed at one time from the bottom of spine (but no other evidence of it having been an ex-library book). Overall in VG to VG+ condition. [WAH-1298]. Seller Inventory # 000198
