1879. Newspaper. Complete run of The Nation for the year 1879. Founded by Thomas Davis, Charles Gavin Duffy & John Blake in October 1842, this nationalistic staple served as a mouthpiece for what became known as 'Young Ireland'. The newspaper, whose contributors included Lady Speranza, Charles Kickham and William Careton was said to have "wound itself into the fabric of the Irish heart" and remained very influential even after 1848. Major events covered in the 1879 publications include the death of Isaac Butt, Home Rule, the formation of the Irish Land League etc. Fraying to edges but remaining in good condition overall. . . . .
