Vol I. xii,[1] contents, 466 pp, folding map hand-coloured in outline, portrait frontispiece, 2 folding plans, publisher's list; Vol II. [4] 398 pp, adverts,2 folding plans, publisher's list. Original green gilt embossed boards, slight discolouration to front boards and minor fault inner corner of one board. Palgrave (1826-1888) travelled through Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman disguised as a Syrian physician. He was a Jesuit priest who later renounced catholicism, joining the Foreign Office with many posts abroad. This popular account of his Arabian travels was first published in 1865.
