Unpaginated album has 30 p. filled in at front, 4 more at rear. 17 cm. 16 carte-de-visite photos. Two religious illustrations and some notes inserted. Extensive quotations by the featured religious leaders. Different handwriting for each. Cloth boards with gilt edging. All edges gilt. Front board detached, spine missing. Stains to covers and endpapers. Rear endpapers stuck together. Some rear leaves have chipped corners. A typical entry includes a carte-de-visite of a famous Evangelist with quotation or message to Mrs. Carey. Owner seems to have collected Evangelist's cards like a later generation would baseball cards. Some quotations without photographs and some photographs without quotes. Author of "The Higher Christian Life", a Victorian best seller. His international speaking ministry was the beginning of the Keswick Convention, an annual gathering of conservative Evangelical Christians in Keswick. Photographer Jas. Fisher, Clifton (Bristol).3) Unnamed woman. Photographer H. Thomas, Coblenz. 4) Charles Cook (1804-89). The Crystal Palace was moved from Hyde Park to Sydenham after the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was reopened by Queen Victoria in 1854. No info or photo. 14) Octavia Jary. Woman preacher in mid-Victorian Britain. Had her own chapel in Harpley, near Rudham (Norfolk). Photographer John Burton (ca. 1880-81) & Sons set up a chain of studios in Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham in early to late 1860s. After his death sons continued studio in Leicester until 1911. 15) Geraldine Dening (1841-72). Woman preacher and hymn writer well known in 1860s in Britain. 16) Stephenson Blackwood (1832-93). In his youth called "Beauty" Blackwood since he was considered one of the handsomest eligible bachelors in London. Became a speaker at open-air Evangelical meetings, a strong advocate for improving the conditions of the working classes, and a temperance leader. Knighted 1887. Father of writer Algernon Blackwood.
