Synopsis: Since the 1970s, the Mishnah seen as a document on its own terms has taken its place as a principle focus in the study of religion and of Judaism. This work covers approaches to the study of the Mishnah in the contemporary academy. It proves in diverse ways that the Mishnah defines the critical focus of the study of Judaism. It is a document that rewards study in the academic humanities.

About the Author: Alan J. Avery-Peck is Kraft-Hiatt Professor of Judaic Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts. He has published four volumes of translation and commentary on Rabbinic treatises and, along with Jacob Neusner and William S. Green, is an editor of The Encyclopaedia of Judaism (Brill, 1999). Jacob Neusner holds the positions of Distinguished Research Professor of Religious Studies at the University of South Florida and of Professor of Religion at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. He has published numerous books on a wide range of topics in Jewish history, religion and culture, and is editor of South Florida Studies in the History of Judaism (Scholars Press) and co-editor of The Annual of Rabbinic Judaism: Ancient, Medieval and Modern (Brill).
