Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia

Art, architecture, photography, design, illustrated books and literature 1914-1945. This period saw an unprecedented ferment and outflow of new ideas, perceptions, questions and values. While the overwhelming dynamic was towards an international culture and social renewal, for many of these countries it was also a means to express national identity for the first time, liberated from (or shaking off) the traditional norms of prewar societies. The new art in most cases was not known beyond the national borders. Historical developments would soon make international exposure and circulation impossible, as these countries came under increasingly conservative governments and finally eclipsed by Nazism, war and four decades of communism. During this time, these works were proscribed, suppressed and often destroyed. Thus a good deal of the avant-garde from this era is quite scarce. Please inquire about art work and photography available but not listed on this site.

Brilliant, eccentric lone Czech genius

Josef Vachal (1883-1968), the Czech William Blake, was a visionary book artist and author. In addition to books he authored, illustrated and often published himself, we also have individual color woodcuts from his various productions, which he produced for separate distribution. All Vachal works are rare, and many are extraordinary, original (sometimes zany!) contributions to the visionary and critical traditions of art and spirituality.
