Title and copyright pages dated 1969. Originally published 1951, reprinted 1969 with additional material. Volume 1 pages numbered 1 through 494. Volume 2 pages numbered 496 to 966. Boards of both volumes have been well protected and are clean. Gold lettering on boards and spines is very lightly faded but still legible. Fore edges completely white. Gold illustration of a harpoon on spine of volume 1. Gold Seal of the Inspector of the U.S. Revenue Port of New York on spine of volume 2. 1 page list in volume 1 of the 15 plates at the beginning of volume 2. Plates are black and white photographs and portraits of the Melville family. Pages of both volumes have been kept in excellent shape, text remains neat and legible.
