A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (lower board corners bumped, spine ends gently pushed, mildly askew) in a Very Good + dust jacket (tiny and small chips to the dust jacket's edges, spine sunned, 1 1/4 inch tear starting at the front panel's top edge -- still a very good + example of this title's fragile and typically rather worn uncommon dust jacket), SIGNED, PLACED, and DECORATED BY GEORGE SEFERIS with an apparent presentation TO REX WARNER in another hand; a collection of 12 short stories by Luigi Pirandello, the famed Italian author of novels, short stories, and plays. Widely considered to be a forerunner to the "Theatre of the Absurd", Pirandello's dramatic works influenced the careers great Playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Fernando Arrabal, Edward Albee, and others. A literary genius of his day, Luigi Pirandello won the 1934 Noble Prize in Literature for his "bold and brilliant renovation of the drama and the stage". A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. GEORGE SEFERIS, SIGNED, PLACED, and DECORATED this book on the front free endpaper (and it was apparently presented) to his great friend, frequent translator, and fellow author Rex Warner (whose excellent translations of Seferis' works were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize) as follows: "Rex Warner [underscored] / Tiwpyos Efyipms [his Greek name using English letters] / Storrs Connecticut" under which SEFERIS HAS DRAWN TWO IMAGES ACCOMPANIED BY TWO PAGE NUMBERS. The pages referenced by Seferis are page 103, the first page of the story titled "Sicilian Honour" and page 155, the first page of the story titled "Sicilian Tangerines". Corresponding to the stories, the first of Seferis' drawings appears to be of a shield and the second appears to be of tangerine sections. Books signed by George Seferis are quite scarce and those by other authors signed and presented by Seferis are scarcer still. A Very Good copy of one Nobel Prize-winning author's copy of another Nobel Prize-winning author's work, SIGNED AND PLACED BY GEORGE SEFERIS WITH TWO ILLUSTRATIONS BY GEORGE SEFERIS RELATED TO THE BOOK'S CONTENT.
