About this Item
In Hebrew. 282 pages. 260 x 180 mm. 86 woodcuts inset to the text, re-cut from the 1546 Venice edition. This is 1 of the 100 copies were printed on Canterbury hand made paper. 3 copies were printed on vellum. Bound by Claudia Cohen in quarter blue morocco with giltwork to spine and pale paper over boards. Sahula, active in the 13th century, produced this work of fables as a specifically Jewish, moralistic counterpoint to other popular, lighter medieval tales, of the likes of Sinbad the Sailor. Cleverly structured as an argument between a Cynic and a Moralist, the narrative relies, in part, on scientific material to uphold the main virtues of wisdom, penitence, sound counsel, humility, and reverence.
