Book in near fine condition with faded spine, the rest of the book is clean, tight and very fine in green cloth. jacket is not price clipped ($2.75) with tiny chips to top edge. one closed tear on verso else fine. Marthe was a model for Toulouse- Lautrec, and the 13 " rarely seen" illustrations are by Toulouse-Lautrec. Marthe is study, strikingly modern in vividness and approach, of the disintegration of a human soul. Marthe drifts constantly, hopelessly downstream in this adult story which critics call (1948) one of the " most interesting documents of body and soul." The first edition (1876) of Marthe sold out in a few days, and the high price it soon brought did not permit its purchase except as a collectors item. This book should be in the collection any serious Lautrec aficionado. this copy in particular is a very nice one. Bookseller Inventory # 000316
