xv, 393 pp, photogravure plates, coloured plates, illustrations to the text, original dark green cloth, blind lettered to upper cover, gilt lettering to spine, a little rubbed at extremities, generally in very good condition. First published in 1906. Lowell (1855-1916) was Founder and Director of the Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona; his theories regarding canals on Mars showing that intelligent life forms were tapping the dry planet's polar ice-caps for water was regarded with some scepticism at the time, and Lowell and his observatory were mainly ostracised; his theories were disproved by NASA and subsequent missions from the 1960s onwards. However, his vision of an ancient Martian culture who formed canals influenced the development of science fiction in the first half of the 20th century. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers on a fascinating journey to a world beyond our own: the planet Mars. Through the lens of the telescope, the author takes us on a journey of discovery, chronicling the progression of human understanding of Mars over the last century. This book dives deep into the history of the study of Mars, highlighting the key discoveries that have shaped our knowledge of the red planet. We see how early astronomers mapped its surface, revealing the shifting white caps at its poles and the enigmatic blue-green patches that cover its landscape. The author then introduces us to the remarkable "canals," those long, straight features that have intrigued scientists for over a century, and the theories that have been put forward to explain their origin and purpose. This book stands as a testament to the power of observation and the enduring mystery of Mars, offering a glimpse into a world that has captivated humankind for centuries.
