About this Item
Linen-backed map of the United States published by the General Land Office. Chipping with loss along several folds, including some loss in the title. Most interesting on this copy of the map are manuscript notations indicating the progress of the Union Pacific Railroad. The routes of the Union and Central Pacific are noted, with hand-drawn flags at key locations. These notations were clearly done, or completed in, 1869 as there are crossed flags near Promontory Point. Wyoming is also named, in manuscript similar to that printed on the map. WIth its representation of mineral deposits, this map is reminiscent in many ways to the Keeler map of the West which was issued around the same time. This map was drafted by Joseph Gorlinski. Wilson was the commissioner of the Land Office. Wheat 1168. Seller Inventory # m01452
