Ex-library copy. Early reprint from 1886, originally published in 1871. Dark orange cloth boards with design stamped in black on cover and gilt lettering on spine. Some rubbing to edges; fraying to cloth at head and tail of spine; corners bumped; minor scratching and scuffing. No dust jacket. Binding is fairly tight. Interior has light toning. Ex-library marks are a bookplate from the Memorial Free Library in Menomonie, WI on the front pastedown, a card sleeve on the rear pastedown, a stamp on the title page, and a call number on the spine that has since been blacked out. Includes black-and-white illustrations throughout. Thomas H. Huxley (1825-1895) was a biologist and anthropologist specializing in anatomy who is best known for his strong support of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This book for students of comparative anatomy is intended to offer "a condensed statement of the most important facts relating to the structure of vertebrated animals" (from preface).
