Bound on original red cloth, titles in gilt and black, with gilt blocks on front board and spine. Minor wear to extremities, spine a little sunned and fly leaves browned; otherwise a very good copy. Inscriptions on third free endpaper. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by 84 numbered text figures. Decorated by numerous small silhouette figures. Scarce copy of this practical guide to performing hand tricks by palming coins, copiously illustrated. It is a true first edition as the Hamley's edition of the same year sometimes had the title page suppressed. The 'King of Koins,' Thomas Nelson Downs (1868-1938) was self-taught and earned his living by performing his coin tricks in Vaudeville and later theatre. He retired to his home town of Marshalltown, Iowa at the age of forty two, but continued to perform locally, write books and also sold his own range of magic equipment.
