Synopsis: Bizarre tales of murder and investigation in the drumlins, valleys and towns of Monaghan in the nineteenth century, based upon a casebook just recently discovered that has never been lodged in any archive anywhere. This is NEW information and highlights such cases as: The Illigitimate Half-Sisters Of Oscar Wilde - Emily and Mary Wilde died tragically at Drumaconner House while dancing by the fire - their deaths are kept quiet so as not to shame Sir William Wilde. The Legend Of The Sleepwalking Nun - Sister Mary Keogh is discovered drowned in the Convent lake near the Crannog - to this day, local legend tells the story of her death.

From the Back Cover: The stories that appear are painful, detailed, gruesome and sad and deserve to be remembered; for those who have suffered in these pages were the silent martyrs that created the need for change in our contemporary society. These are all true stories of death, and here for the first time these forgotten souls, many buried in unmarked graves around the country, are remembered.

Melancholy Madness investigates life, death and the duties and responsibilities of the coroner in post-famine Ireland through the inquests recorded in the coroner's casebook. The actual facts of people institutionalised, the dysfunctional dynamic within families, the hardships of daily tasks and rural life and the state in which a body was found is offered along with the testimony of family members, relatives and other witnesses.

The reports are unique ? they are one of the only complete collections of their kind in Ireland covering a 20-year time period. They were never lodged in the National Archives and have not been referred to or published anywhere. This is the first time they appear in any publication.
