His instincts told him that such a move would outrage the financial community, but his moral sense told him it was in the public interest, and the latter prevailed. Likewise, it was a matter of principle that led him to speak out against the annexation of Texas in 1844, when he was the leading contender for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Four years later, knowing that he faced certain defeat, he accepted the nomination of the anti~slavery Free Soil Party because he believed it was morally right. An entirely new image of Martin Van Buren emerges from John Niven's comprehensive biography. Subtitled "The Romantic Age of American Politics," it is an in~depth study of the man set against the backdrop of his times.~ A distinguished professor of History at the Claremont Graduate School in California, John Niven's style combines historic insights with a wealth of fascinating detail. He traveled the length and breadth of the country to compile the extensive research for Martin Van Buren. Niven has also written several other authoritative works on 18th and 19th century America, including Dynamic America, Years of Turmoil: The Civil War and Reconstruction, Connecticut for the Union, Gideon Welles, Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, and Connecticut Hero: Israel Putnam. The meticulous detail of Niven's study is complemented by the meticulous detail of the volume itself. An important addition to The Library of the Presidents, it is bound in rich, genuine leather and decorated with an original cover design reminiscent of the age of Van Buren. The title of this collector's edition is stamped on the spine in 22kt gold. Seller Inventory # 7271104
