Marshall Space Flight Center (Huntsville, Alabama) under authorization of Technical Directive A2-ABX-011, 30 December 1965.Years in advance of NASA's planned Apollo mission to the moon in 1969, this 1965 technical document was prepared as a study on the feasibility of transforming the Shelter Laboratory Module into a Lunar Shelter/Observatory with optical telescope. The first lunar observatory and telescope would have to wait until the 1972 Apollo 16 mission, but this study documents one of the early efforts to that end by a NASA contractor. This Gemini/Apollo era document is 57 pages with technical illustrations, a Conclusions and Recommendations section, and References. INTRODUCTION: "This report covers the selection of the most applicable second-generation shelter system and the transformation of this system into a lunar surface shelter/observatory. The concepts conceived in this study will provide the necessary space to support two scientist-astronauts for twenty-eight (28) days on the lunar surface." OBJECTIVE: "To prepare conceptual designs of a lunar surface shelter/observatory capable of providing two scientist-astronauts with support for a twenty-eight (28) day lunar surface mission. accomplished by transforming an existing shelter design into a shelter/observatory by the inclusion of an optical telescope and associated equipment.".
