About this Item
The Loyalists of Massachusetts; Their Memorials, Petitions and Claims; by E. Alfred Jones, M.A., F.S.A., author of The Old Silver of the American Churches, American Members of the Inns of Court, and of The Loyalists on New Jersey; with 63 Portraits in Photogravure; The Saint Catherine Press, London, 1930. Addenda et Corrigenda inserted on page xxii. The book was printed by The Arden Press, W. H. Smith & Son, Stamford Street, London, S. E. 1. From the Introduction The genesis of this work is to be found in the bundles of original and unpublished Loyalist manuscripts in the Public Record Office in London. Throughout these pages the loyalists have been allowed to declare their sentiments in their own words, as expressed in their petitions and memorials. The Act of Parliament appointing Commissioners to enquire into the losses of the loyalists was passed in 1783, and the above-mentioned memorials and petitions, in the handwriting of the loyalists or, in the case of the illiterate, in that of their agents. The Commissioners sat in the charming seventeenth-century house, called Newcastle House, still standing in Lincoln s Inn Fields, and here they listened in person to the sufferings and claims of the refugees then in London and to many others who fled from America immediately upon the conclusion of the war, while later the petitions of those exiles who sought refuge in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were examined on the spot by the Commissioners. The book is full of references to new lives in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Many such as John Wentworth had a significant impact in their new country. The book is collated complete. This large format book, 341 pages measuring 280mm X 198mm is in near-fine condition. The only fault is a stain on the bottom of the front cover and bottom of the spine. Otherwise the book is in fine conditions, with some pages unopened. A previous owner s signature is inside the front cover. A very scarce title of an important work on the Loyalists coming to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This large volume may require additional postage. Seller Inventory # 2351a
