About this title

Synopsis:

A novel about violence, sex and obsession, this is a portrayal of one man's attempt to find meaning amid chaos. Charlie Smith is the author of two previous novels, "Canaan" and "Shine Hawk".

From Library Journal:

In the last 15 years Buddy Drake's New York-based production company has cranked out a dozen low-budget slasher films. Drake's next project will test the limits of that sleazy genre and astonish and confound his critics, if he can only get the necessary funding. Desperate for cash, he turns to his wealthy ex-wife Bess, wooing her with reminiscences of the life they once shared and with tantalizing details of his half-finished script. Smith's previous novel, Shine Hawk (1988), was widely praised for its lyrical prose and Southern gothic motif. Here the lyricism is replaced by a stupifying verbosity and the gothic element degenerates into Grand Guignol. There are occasional flashes of brilliance in this book, but few readers will have the tenacity to find them. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/90.
