Volume I focuses on William Caxton's life and the contemporary environment of the printing trade. Volume II (published in 1863) details the work of Caxton and his Printing Office: the master printer, paper, types, compositor, presses, and more. Included is a detailed list of books printed by Caxton, categorized by the six typefaces used and accompanied by facsimile examples. "Mr. Blades, ., by his painstaking research, has cleared up many doubtful points in the career of our proto-printer, and his book is in every way worthy of the importance of its subject" (Bigmore & Wyman, A Bibliography of Printing, p. 65). A tall, wide-margined, LARGE PAPER SET. Some foxing to the plates, only very sporadically in text; offset from turn-ins onto ffeps; small bump to corner of vol.
