Book Description London - Chapman And Hall, 1884. Hardcover. Book Condition: VERY GOOD. A limited edition of this biography of the famous illustrator Phiz, including many example of his work. Hablot Knight Browne, under his pen name 'Phiz', illustrated many editions of works by authors such as Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth during the 19th century. Browne got his lucky break when he was invited to bring some of his work to a publisher's office for Dickens to inspect, alongside William Makepeace Thackery. Dickens preferred Browne, whose third plate or the novel Pickwick was signed 'Phiz'. The name stuck, having been chosen to fit with Dickens's 'Boz'. The poem published by Punch to mark his death is prefaced to this edition. Number 100 of 150 copies. This copy previously belonged to R. H. Edmondson Bysewood Windermere, and contains his personal bookplate. The copy is also initialled by the author. Condition: In the original printed cloth boards. Externally smart, with a little wear and bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. The original gilt of the titles has been effaced. There is some light marking to the boards. With a personal bookplate to the front pastedown, alongside a dedicatory ink inscription. The text block is untrimmed and the edges are a little dusty as a result. Internally with light spotting here and there throughout. Generally firmly bound. With a contemporary ink inscription to the title page. Overall: VERY GOOD. Bookseller Inventory # 050448
