Large octavo, 2 volumes. Vol. I: iv, 460pp., 42pp., viii. Vol. II: 448pp., 32pp., v. A nearly very good, unrestored set in contemporary full sheep with gilt-stamped spine labels to both volumes. Title page detached but present in volume I, some scattered foxing throughout both volumes, but mostly a clean, sound set. Some scuffs to extremities. Charming contemporary bookseller's ticket to the paste-down of volume I for S. Garrett of Cincinnati, who advertises that he "Keeps constantly on hand an assortment of Medical, School and Miscellaneous Books, Stationery, &c." This second edition of Marshall's biography of Washington was published three decades after the first edition (which had been issued in five smaller volumes). An atlas with ten maps was published separately around the same time that the two-volume set was released, but the atlas is not present here (as usual). Frontispiece portrait of Washington--an engraving after a painting by Gilbert Stuart--is present in volume I. See Howes M317, Sabin 44788. Seller Inventory # 11355
