Stunning three-volume set of this biography of the first American president, a work that Irving considered his "masterpiece." Orig. published in 5 volumes, 1855-1859, this is a slightly later edition (c. late 1800s, no dates in books) now in 3 volumes, retaining all of the original text & illustrative steel engravings, which appear as plates & frontispieces (with intact tissue guards) across all 3 books. In approximately 350 pages each, the books are small quartos with deep green cloth-covered boards, elaborately blindstamped with a vine-like design to front, lettered in bright gilt to front & spine (though the gilt is heavily faded to the latter). Condition across all three volumes is VG: very clean, pages creamy off-white with significant tanning, but completely supple. Former owner's name & a later git inscription to ffeps of all books; else, pages are unmarked. Text blocks secure, though some of the hinges are starting, while others have been reglued. Modest rubbing to extremities, corners bumped (with some cloth loss). Vol 1 is VG-, with some spots to exterior boards that are somewhat bleached. Vol 3 is VG+-Near Fine, nearly flawless.
