Description:

8vo. 278pp. Signed by Stephen Fry on title page. Head and foot of spine bumped slightly, corners of boards bent slightly. Light edge wear to bottom corners of boards. Corners of dust jacket bumped slightly. Light surface scratches to front and back cover of dust jacket. Fry's first published novel, deals with a compulsive liar finding (or desperately searching for) an identity, while battling boredom by fabricating monumental lies, fabricating shocking events, and playing spy. While the content can teeter on dark or distasteful, Stephen Fry keeps everything grounded with his comedic writing style and quirky characters. Synopsis: Adrian Healey is not like other boys at school. He loves Hugo Cartwright, but is loved by the less appetising Pigs Trotter. He goes to Cambridge and with his philology Professor embarks on an adventure that takes in an international espionage conspiracy and disgraceful scenes on the cricket field.

From the Inside Flap: Adrian Healey is magnificently unprepared for the long littleness of life; unprepared too for the afternoon in Salzburg when he will witness the savage murder of a Hungarian violinist; unprepared to learn about the Mendax device; unprepared for more murders and wholly unprepared for the truth. Unprepared or not, Adrian is led through an adventure that takes in toast, Piccadilly rent-boys, Charles Dickens's lost pornographic novel, an international espionage conspiracy, disgraceful scenes on the cricket field and a machine that compels its victims to tell the truth.
