Book Description Printed by Macdonald and Son, for Thomas Lovewell & Co, London, 1814. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. VERY GOOD CONDITION AND INTERESTING PROVENANCES First edition. 2 volumes in 1. xii, 273pp. & viii, 264pp. 8"x4". Rebound in 19th century half brown calf and black cloth, raised spine bands, ruled, titled, and decorated top edge in gilt. In attractive period rebinding with modest rubbing and a soil spot to bottom spine; two bookplates and one label with a poem affixed to front endpapers. A few small offset spots to endpapers, edge toning to flyleaves, bibliographical pencil notes to first half-title page, penciled ownership signature to both title pages. Occasional foxing else very good+. Two Bookplates. One of William Whateley Q.C., the treasurer of the Inner Temple, and the other of Alfred Heacock Whittaker who wrote "Occupational Health in America" in 1962 with Henry B. Selleck. Penciled name of F??? Palmer to each title page as yet another an owner. Scarce collection of letters from Lord Nelson to his mistress Lady Emma Hamilton. "The publisher, Thomas Lovewell, went bankrupt in 1817 and was forced to put the letters up for sale. They were purchased by Croker acting on behalf of the Admiralty and Government who were anxious that they were kept out of public circulation. Harrison is often cited as the editor but my own research years ago suggests that Oliver (a servant with whom Emma had quarrelled} was the culprit - although Harrison may have been involved too." quoted from Michael Nash, UK. The supplement in volume II, running from page 107 on, contains letters from Lord Nelson to Miss Horatia Nelson Thomson, Miss Charlotte Nelson, letters from Alexander Davison, Esq. to Lady Hamilton, a letter from Lady Hamilton to Alexander Davison, Esq., a letter from Lady Hamilton to Viscount Sidmouth, letters from Sir William Hamilton to Lady Hamilton, and numerous letters from Sir William Hamilton to Lord Nelson, and finally a number of letters from Lord Nelson to Sir William Hamilton.
