About this Item

Quarto. rebound in brown cloth, black morocco spine label lettered in gilt, new endpapers. Thirty-First Congress, Second Session. Ex. Doc. No. 45. Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby Jones captured the port of Monterey in October, 1842, without resistance based on a report (false) that the U.S. and Mexico were at war. However, he had a sad ending to an illustrious career when he was court-martialed in February, 1850, for using "unauthorized funds" in transporting refugees from lower California after the Mexican War. He had transported 300 refugees out of Lower California, paying the expenses from military contributions at Mazatlan. [Howes: J242]. Occasional faint browning throughout, else fine.
