Whittingham was the Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Maryland. He is responding to a letter from the Roman Catholic Kenrick ot the P.E. Bishops, in which Kenrick finds solace in the Oxford Movement in England, and expresses hopes that the American Bishops would also move toward unity with the Church of Rome.
