A fantastic, informative and long letter (22 column inches) describing a gold seeker, Thomas Tolhurst, and his 1856 journey to Australia, which discusses his 72 day journey by sea, arrival in Melbourne, and trip to Bendigo on foot. Tolhurst, a former resident of Hastings, details conditions in Bendigo, including the cost of living ("we can live out here as cheap as in England. It only costs us 12s a week each, no rent to pay, no firing."), prices of goods, description of the climate, landscape and the Aborigines, the rate of pay for various trades, and techniques and processes used at the "gold diggins" (sic).
