Appears to be an annual derived from a regular publication, but this does not constitute a bound volume of dated issues; pages are sequentially numbered and lack any masthead. Includes hundreds of public domain engravings by Edward Whymper and others. 7-3/8" x 10-7/8", (iv) + 812pp. Publisher, editor and publication date are surmised; the book itself is silent (and does not seem to have any pages missing). Sewn signatures in heavy dark blue cloth-covered boards. The title is embossed in gilt foil on the front cover and spine, and a floral design is blind embossed onto the front and back cover. The spine is worn, and bumped/frayed at the extremities. The cloth has split at the front hinge to approx. 4" from the top. Front hinge is cracked on the inside, and is at this point held on by the binding cloth. The front free end paper has separated and is lying loose. The binding is moderately cocked, but is otherwise sound. A gift inscription dated 1898 is written in ink on the fly leaf, and a much smaller and much more recent owner's rubber stamp is on the same page. Some spotting, soiling on the first few pages, and otherwise occasionally throughout. Otherwise, pages are age toned but clean and unmarked.
