Book Description Paris, J.B. Baillière et fils, 1875, 1875. Couverture rigide. Book Condition: Très bon. Edition originale. Paris, J.B. Garrison & Morton, 5673 ; Fulton & Stanton, The centennial of surgical anesthesia, p. 90 ; B.M. Duncum, The development of inhalation anaesthesia, p. 34, 219, 310, 379-381 ; M.Th. Bookseller Inventory # 10038R

Book Description J.-B. Baillière, Paris:, 1875. paperback. 1 FIRST EDITION. A very nice copy. "It was Magendie’s illustrious pupil, Claude Bernard, however, to whom we are indebted for basic work in this field. Bernard, realizing that the successful practice of medicine must be based on sound physiological principles, carried his research into all possible lines. It was his good fortune to be working at the time that anesthesia had become accepted as a necessary and a desirable part of the practice of surgery Bernard tried hard to place anesthesiology on a scientific basis and his monograph can be considered a landmark." [Keys]. "This monograph is a landmark in the history of the development of anesthesia, for Bernard did some basic work on the physiological effects of anesthetic drugs, pointed out the dangers of such drugs, and advocated the use of pre-anesthetic depressants such as morphine." [Heirs of Hippocrates]. GM 5673; Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1798; Keys, History of Surgical Anesthesia, p. 71; Waller 959. 8vo. vii, 536 pp. Illustrations. Quarter brown morocco with marbled boards, gilt-stamped spine title with raised bands, original printed wrappers bound in. Fine. Bookseller Inventory # M11541

Book Description Paris, etc.: Librairie J.-B. Baillière et Fils, 1875., 1875. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. vii, 536 pp; 6 text figs. Recent 1/4-leather and marbled boards, with original wrappers bound in. Wrappers chipped along the edges. Untrimmed. Very Good. First Edition. Garrison-Morton 5673. "Bernard tried hard to place anesthesiology on a scientific basis and his monograph can be considered a landmark. Bernard . . . includes an excellent summary of the history of anesthesia [and] may have been the first to suggest pre-anesthetic medication with morphine and other central depressants. Bernard was also one of the early advocates of the need for adequate oxygen supply during anesthesia. Bernard clearly recognized the dangers of anesthesia and made a careful study from the theoretical viewpoint" (Keys, The History of Surgical Anesthesia. 2d ed., pp. 71-72).
