Book Description Readex Microprint 1833 / 1966, Cambridge / USA, 1966. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. 1966 Reprint. 5-1/4 x 7-3/4 x 1/2 ". 1966 Hardcover, without DJ as issued . VG+ . Especially Nice Clean condition . appears to be unopened and unread inside. There is a tiny edgewear spine corners, crease top cover, small smudge top edge; slight lean; slight age darkening to page, and one very small printer's mark one page top inside, not affecting any text . 90 pages ; 87 pages of original text, plus 3 page modern foreword . This is a handsome book, brown faux leather grained cover with Gold gilt title impressed on front and spine and pale beige faux linen end pages . It is part of the Great Americana series, a 1966 facsimile printing for the series, after the 1833 Cambridge edition of the work as originally published, with the original 1833 introduction . The full title : " Oregon ; or A Short History of a Long Journey - From the Atlantic Ocean to the Region of the Pacific by Land ; Drawn up from the Notes and Oral Information of John B. Wyeth , one of the Party who left Mr. Nathaniel J. Wyeth , July 28th, 1832 , Four days' march beyond the Ridge of the Rocky Mountains , and the only one who has returned to New England " . tells a great deal about the narrative, but the hardships and hand-to-mouth existence of those early explorers on their Oregon expedition as detailed here could not be imagined by the modern traveller . They had been woefully ill-prepared for the journey, like so many, and had suffered greatly as a result . Those who left the party of John Wyeth's cousin Captain Nathaniel Wyeth, had an even more eventful , and difficult, journey on the way back than they did on the way out . When Captain Nathaniel Wyeth retuned to Boston, from his Pacific journey, which had been financially unsuccessful but had fired him with such a love of the west that he subsequently led another expedition to the Pacific, he was met with the published account of his cousin John, wherein he told the tale warts and all, and was incensed and denounced the book as being 'full of lies' . This is the book he was so infuriated by, the book that enthralled Boston with tales of the journey West that few had dared to even attempt . The tale of the harrowing journey from Pittsburgh to the Mississippi . to the country of Indians . Flat-head and others . down rivers . in a canoe to Boonsville . and over unbroken trails, on the way west to the Columbia . Lewis and Clarke are mentioned . The bow and arrow of one Indian tribe is mused upon as being so close to ancient Roman swords and shields, as to set the author to wondering 'how came they' to be so ? We are put right in the heart of the action on this account . But was it all true ? . Or was Nathaniel Wyeth right to denounce it ? .Well, it was certainly true that they went so far, and turned back, and made it home again to 'cultivated land' . As for the rest . you may decide for yourself in reading his tale of his 1832 attempt at the Oregon trail . A nice readable little vintage book, part of the Great Americana series of history . " Oregon ; or A Short History of a Long Journey - From the Atlantic Ocean to the Region of the Pacific by Land ; Drawn up from the Notes and Oral Information of John B. Wyeth , one of the Party who left Mr. Nathaniel J. Wyeth , July 28th, 1832 , Four days' march beyond the Ridge of the Rocky Mountains , and the only one who has returned to New England " . by John B. Wyeth . 1966 slim hardcover, published by Readex Microprint, USA as part of the Great Americana series *** Securely packed for Safe delivery ~ Shipping safely Worldwide, since 1965 *** 5-1/4 x 7-3/4 x 1/2 ".
