About this Item

Early biography of the great American revolutionary. Sturdily rebound in probably the late 19th century in brown half leather with brown cloth on covers showing considerable wear. Hinges and joints solid and title in gilt on spine bold. Four raised bands on spine. Wear to leather at edges and corners. Marbled endpapers in a feathered pattern, and edges of text block also marbled in same pattern. Contents with moderate amount of foxing but paper still supple. Endpapers appear to be 19th century replacements, but very old book seller ticket on front free flyleaf that probably dates from the time of the rebind. This was a "tell-all" biography of Paine written by a former "friend." Some of the content rather scandalous, and obviously this friend had a bit of an axe to grind. Howes Usiana C-336, Sabin 12379. Size: Octavo, 347pp. Bookseller Inventory # 1856
