209pp., plus engraved frontispiece portrait. 12mo. Later three-quarter 19th-century calf and marbled boards, gilt leather labels. Minor shelf wear. Minor occasional foxing. Very good. In a green cloth slipcase. Later edition of a searing treatment of Martin Van Buren first published in 1835, at the outset of his ultimately successful 1836 campaign for the presidency. As quickly as 1836 a purported "tenth" edition was published in Philadelphia. In 1845, Van Buren had been out of office for four years, though he was perpetually considered a threat to run again. The work is political mudslinging at its best, with the preface announcing: "Statesmen are gamesters.Martin Van Buren is not the man he is cracked up to be."
