With a presentation letter from a R. Ranking to the noted London legal writer Francis Const, reading: "As I have the patronage of two or three presentation copies of a very interesting pamphlet which will be before the public this week. I hasten to send you one of them.will pay you for the time of reading to the very end." A thorough, if misguided attempt to establish once and for all that former Prime Minister William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, Duke of Portland, was the pseudonymous political pamphlet writer, Junius. The accusation was first made in response to his quarrel with the Duke of Grafton, but was soon dismissed. Bentinck's death in 1809 renewed public curiosity into the charge, hence the present publication. Johnston grounds his argument in the fact that Junius seems to have been unduly concerned with the questionable transfer of land from the Duke of Portland to Sir James Lowther. The DNB dismisses the claim as "absurd." The appendix reprints Almon's 1768 publication of the controversial land transfer case. The folding tables, present here, are usually lacking.
