THE LAND OF BONDAGE; ITS ANCIENT MONUMENTS AND PRESENT CONDITION: BEING THE JOURNAL OF A TOUR IN EGYPT
Available From More sellersView all copies of this book
A candidate for rebinding as the covers are beatifully stamped in blind with a design of the ancient ruins of Egypt, with highlighting in silver. Elaborate border in pattern of ribbon and garlands with the center illustration device slightly recessed to add depth to the covers. The silvering a bit faded but still pleasing. Spine cloth did not wear so well and it has large piece missing at head of spine and along top front side. One piece of the spine with the lettering of "BONDAGE" is detached from spine but mostly intact and laid into book so a repair is possible preserving most of the design and lettering elements of the spine. Front and back covers are currently hanging on only with the help of an old tape repair that looks as thought it could be removed without damaning anything of the cloth since it is mostly peeled away already. Internally the pages are quite clean although some are age browned. Foxing mostly affecting just the blank front and back leaves, although frontis plate and final plate near back of book is also affected by foxing. Otherwise the plates vary from being somewhat toned in the image (looks like tinting) to being still virtually fresh. Some illustrations also with text. Fold-out plate of Alexandria is present but is tape mended at the crease lines. The illustrations for this book were done in a first rate fashion and some are rather hauntingly charming. All edges of text block gilt. Bookseller Inventory # 1753
